Closed Gala Bingo club to be converted into an Evangelical church?
Monday, August 31st, 2009An erstwhile Gala Bingo club in Upper Norwood in South London might be reborn as a church.
The building has been lying vacant since the bingo club shut down. The UK has seen numerous bingo clubs shut shop due to various reasons. The Smoking Ban caused bingo halls to lose a lot of business, the global recession did not help matters and the final blow was the drastically increased rate of bingo tax levied on the bingo halls. Gala has had to shut down many of its bingo halls and has also laid off staff as a result of falling business at many of its locations.
There are plans to convert the building in question into an Evangelical Church. This proposal has, however, met with significant opposition from locals. There is also interest from City Screen who would like to use the premises as a movie house for screening foreign language and Art House movies.
There are reports that more than 5,000 people in the area are opposed to the idea of the Gala Bingo hall building being used as a church and have even signed a petition to that effect. Many of them feel a movie house would be more welcome.
The KICC Evangelical church is based in Wimbledon at present and are in possession of the freehold to the Gala club building. The Chief Operations Manager of the KICC, J. McGlashan spoke to the Croydon Today about these plans. He said “Its intention is to use the building as a centre from which the whole community could benefit. The church says it will actively support the community by providing skills training, counseling services, youth meetings and a children’s club.” “local people would be welcome to use the café and bookshop planned for the centre. And they would be allowed to watch, free of charge, weekly showings of independent films.”
The matter is now with the Bromley council which will announce its decision after serious deliberation.
