An Insight into the Word “Bingo”

The word Bingo refers to various games such as card games, Housie, online Bingo or Scrabble. In the U.K. Bingo is associated with Housie, a game in which printed tickets of 15 numbers on three lines are used. Similarly in the U.S. Bingo is a game wherein a printed ticket of randomly generated 5 x 5 numbers is played. This is a very popular game in Canada as well. Online bingo games came about with the emergence of Internet and wide spread use of computers in houses and offices. Bingo, in general, has a long and rich history one which dates back as far as the 16th century.

In North America, the term Bingo is used in the game Scrabble. It is also associated with video games. The connotation Bingo also denotes a dog in a folk song or a musical dance where a trio of boys is called “Bingo boys”. Even in the early 1991, a film called Bingo was released which was all about a dog. This game has originated from the Italian lottery and was primarily played by the French aristocrats. In the 19th century, variations of Bingo were used as an educational tool to teach children multiplication tables, spelling and history. Slowly throughout Europe, it became extremely popular and was regularly played at county fairs and carnivals.

In 1930, an American traveling salesman saw the game being played at a carnival in Germany. He found the game extremely exciting and decided to bring the idea back to America which acquired the name Bingo while being played amongst friends. The Bingo card game’s popularity spread steadily and the high demand led to the publication of instruction manual and monthly news letters. Slowly Bingo became the generic name for all variations of the game, including Internet and on-line Bingo. In 1986, the national Bingo game was legalized but the biggest change to affect the game was emergence of Internet Bingo game.  It is believed that more than 3 million people play on-line Bingo everyday. Bingo is a gambling activity more popular with women and younger people of both sexes.
