Mecca Bingo land operations pull down Rank revenues – Online Bingo News

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Clarion Gaming is reporting that Rank Group has suffered a 16% drop in its land-based Mecca Bingo business revenue when compared to the same time last year.

The drop is considered the result of a recently implemented smoking ban in the UK and a double tax on land bingo games. In response, Rank has erected smoking shelters in 80 clubs in an effort to keep its smoking customers.

According to Rank’s statement on its financial situation, it has provided a summary of its future strategy in dealing with the decline:

• Programme of disposals and restructuring complete
• Vigorous action to combat external headwinds
• Aggressive cost cutting actions taken, capital
expenditure deferred, dividend cancelled
• Revenue growth through delivery of improved
customer experience and value

Neteller makes profits progress in 2008 – Online bingo news

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Isle of Man-based e-wallet Neteller has posted a first quarter rise of 5% in revenues over its fourth quarter results. The results are a strong indication that the company’s plan to expand its business through Asian and European markets is succeeding.

However, the result shows the company’s recovery from its painful exit of the US online gambling market in late 2006 is proceeding slowly. The implementation of the US’ Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act forced many online gaming-related companies to flee the US market, including online bingo games operators and online bingo halls. The resulting financial losses profoundly affected the online bingo industry with many operators forging a similar strategy to Neteller in an effort to rebuild their businesses

Neteller also includes general online payment services through its Netbanx service and has signed up new gaming and non-gaming merchants. These are expected to provide “tens of millions” to Neteller in extra transactions.

Neteller President and CEO Ron Martin said: “The business has continued to deliver a good performance in the first quarter. Growth in our key European and Asia Pacific markets remains encouraging and as we introduce new payment solutions and targeted marketing programmes, we hope to see this momentum continue.”

Bwin takes French Open Tennis to court – Online bingo news

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Bwin, one of Europe’s largest online gaming and online bingo operators, is to take the French Open tennis tournament to court as part of a litigation surrounding a perceived slandering of online gaming due to a ban on online betting at the tournament.
French Open’s organisers sparked the court case after they made complaints in Belgium and Paris asserting Internet betting companies stain the reputation of the clay-court championship.

“Following claims by the French tennis federation that services offered by online sports betting operators present a danger to the ethics of sport, Bwin is suing the organisers of the French Open for damages before a Paris court,” a Bwin statement siad.

Bwin, which offers online bingo games to its European customers, is also currently engaged in legal battles with a number of German states over their implementation of state-run gambling monopolies that would see Bwin squeezed out of the online gaming market in that country. Bingo online is not a large market in Germany, but some online bingo hall operators see a potential for growth there.
