Advent Calendars: Read This First

Advent calendars are the most heavily promoted Christmas offer in bingo, and the one that most often disappoints.

The format sounds generous — a prize behind every door. The detail that gets buried is that most require a qualifying deposit each day to open that day's door, and the prizes are weighted heavily towards the end of the month. Miss a few days and the ones you were playing towards may no longer be reachable.

Three questions worth asking before you start one:

  • Does opening a door need a deposit? If so, what is the minimum, and every day or just some?
  • What happens if you miss a day? Some calendars reset your progress entirely.
  • What are the prizes actually worth? "Up to £500" usually means one player, one door, one day.

None of that makes them a bad deal. A calendar you were going to deposit into anyway is free extra value. A calendar that changes how much you deposit is the room's promotion working exactly as designed.

Funded Games and Seasonal Specials

Some Christmas games are reserved for players who have collected points or tickets. The season usually opens with warm-up games carrying decent prizes plus entry into a bigger funded special later on.

Buying into one can be worth it. The prizes are seasonally large, and the ticket price is often the same as an ordinary game. Just be clear whether you are buying into the game or into a qualifier for the game — that distinction is where the value sits, and it is not always prominent.

Christmas Slots

There are more festive slots every year, and they are broadly the same slots with snow on. Santa, Rudolph, and cash.

What does change in December is the promotion around them: free spins on themed games, prize drops, and leaderboard events. The games themselves play the same all year, so treat a Christmas slot promotion as a slots offer that happens to be festive, not a festive offer that happens to involve slots.

Common Questions About the Season

When do Christmas bingo bonuses start?
The first teasers usually appear in late October, rolling on from Halloween promotions. The season proper starts on 1 December when advent calendars open, and the biggest jackpots land between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
Are advent calendar bonuses worth it?
It depends entirely on whether opening a door requires a deposit. If you were going to play anyway, a calendar is free extra value. If it changes how much you deposit, the promotion is working as designed rather than as a gift.
What is a funded bingo game?
A game with a guaranteed prize pot put up by the room rather than funded by ticket sales. At Christmas these are often reserved for players who have collected tickets in earlier warm-up games.
Do Christmas bonuses have wagering requirements?
Deposit match bonuses almost always do. Free tickets and enhanced jackpots usually do not, which is why we rank them higher. Check the terms before you opt in, not after.
Is the quiet week after Christmas a good time to play?
Often, yes. Between 27 and 31 December many rooms keep prize pots high while player numbers drop, which shortens the odds without changing the ticket price.

Play Responsibly

Christmas is an expensive month and promotions are designed to increase how much you play. Set your limits before December, not during it. Bingo is entertainment, not income.
